You Learn Something New Every Day
On the third day of driving the Porsche to run-in the new engine, I experienced a new problem that set me back for a couple of days. I had intended to drive down to the St. Lawrence over some scenic back roads to put on another few hundred kilometres. My drive didn’t last long. I went down Highway 16, intending to go to Merrickville, then on to Brockville. Just rear Rideau River Provincial Park, I heard a faint ticking sound, like a speedometer cable. I’ve heard it before but couldn’t figure out what it could be. All of a sudden, it went bang and started to graunch loudly, varying with speed.
I pulled over and checked all the suspension points I could see, tried to wobble the wheels (bearing check) and looked at the brake ducts, which I thought might be rubbing on a tire. Couldn’t see anything; drove a bit further and it didn’t go away; it only happened in motion; but it was not the engine or transmission. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger seat!
So I limped home and figured I’d attend to whatever it was, as well as troubleshoot a problem with the parking lights. Since I took off the running light to install the oil cooler scoop, I don’t have front or rear parking lights. I hate this electrical stuff.
But I decided to begin by jacking up the rear to look at the right side, since the sound seemed to be over there. When I got it jacked up and the right rear wheel off, I could see right away what the problem was. In the first year I had the car, I had to repair a problem with a parking brake cable. There’s supposed to be a C-shaped groove in the edge of the trailing arm, through which the cable passes on its way to the wheel. Somehow that groove had become worn into a U-shaped groove, so the cable wouldn’t stay in place. Before my very first DE event, I had to fix that problem to pass tech inspection. I used a small piece of metal to jam the cable into the groove. Last year I improved on that by slipping a split piece of ½” copper pipe over the cable and forcing it into the groove.
